Wow, Twitter has really taken off since we signed on at TBK just a few short months ago. The other recruiting bloggers and UK websites shortly followed suit after realizing what a wonderful tool Twitter really is.
It’s impossible to turn your TV on, watch anything, and not hear about Twitter. The practice of “tweeting” is being caught on by everyone. Celebs, athletes, news channels, sports teams, ect.
The last time I wrote to you guys about Twitter, it was just an introductory piece and more of a “how to” on the initial setup and install for Twitter. Well by now you’re all probably well aware that Twitter is becoming more feature rich and the various way to “tweet” are expanding just about every week.
There are a few Twitter applications out there for the many platforms in which it can be done and your timeline can be followed. I will take you over those that I have used personally and found to be truly of value, fun, and easy to use.
I’ll start with Twitter from the web.
I’m sure all of you have seen the standard web page version of your Twitter home page. This is the main conduit for those that sit in front of a computer screen all day at work, or access Twitter from their home computer. This is the site accessible from http://www.Twitter.com
/Username where username is substituted with the username you signed up with.
This is the basic way to get your Twitter fill. You have the options of changing your background, your icon and filling in a few short lines about yourself in the bio sections. The drawback are that the page has to be refreshed (F5) in order for you to see if your timeline has changed and if anyone you are following has updated.
An alternative to the web page version that I have begun using is a great, lightweight application that you can download for just about any operating system out there. It’s called TweetDeck. This application stands alone as a running program. Installation is a cinch and all you have to do to set it up is log in with your Twitter credentials. It can be downloaded at http://www.TweetDeck.com/beta/

One great thing about TweetDeck is that it auto updates for you every 1 minute. This way you don’t have to keep refreshing the page to keep up with what’s new. It has a VERY simple interface for entering tweets and shortening URLs so that you can link interesting stuff to your friends without using up so many characters in the 140 limit.
Check out TweetDeck if you haven’t already. It serves as a great alternative to the web interface. It’s feature rich while maintaining a very simplistic and clean look that would you expect from a good Twitter program.
To the left you can see what TweetDeck looks like when it is running on my computer. As you can see there are many options available at the top and the URL modification is just below where you enter your next tweet.
I highly suggest those of you that follow Twitter mainly on a computer screen try this out. It's very handy, very easy and eliminates the need to keep a browser window open to Twitter and manually refresh it.
