The hire of John Calipari has been huge. He's dominated the recruiting world, he's reached an Elite Eight, and a Final Four, not to mention putting 9 kids into the NBA over his two years at UK. It should be no surprise as to why Calipari is college basketballs highest paid coach, and it's also a no brainer that UK wants to keep as long as they can. Calipari is expected to sign an extension with Kentucky Monday morning. Terms of the contract will be announced after the extension is signed. ESPN covers the story in the following article...here's an excerpt:
Kentucky will announce a two-year contract extension for men's basketball coach John Calipari Monday morning, giving him eight more years with the Wildcats, multiple sources told ESPN.com Sunday night.Calipari's previous contract was $31.65 million for eight years. The new deal is expected to have a financial increase over his original contract.
Terms of the deal are expected to be released when the extension is announced.
This latest contract improvement is another indicator that Calipari will stay with Kentucky instead of going to the NBA as he has been speculated to do so since arriving in Lexington. NBA teams aren't paying salaries in this range anymore, meaning Calipari has somewhat priced himself out of the NBA market.
