Congratulations to the Cats on their victory over the LSU Tigers yesterday in Baton Rouge, La.  UK now leads the SEC after the Vanderbilt Commodores managed to lose a not-so-close contest to the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Ga. last night.  I'm sure even UK fans are occupied with the Super Bowl today and all the festivities surrounding this great sporting event.  I caution all to be responsible in their "activities" today and to please not endanger others if they've partied a little too much (DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE).

Twenty years ago Coach Rick Pitino's squad was still seeking their first victory away from Rupp Arena, as their road record fell to 0-8 after a 87-86 loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs.  Coach Pitino continues to complain about the refereeing in the SEC as his team prepares to battle the Georgia Bulldogs.  Sean Woods continues to struggle with his last minute shooting as he has misfired five times with the outcomes of games still in the balance.  Finally, the North Carolina Tar Heels have tied Kentucky for the most college victories, both programs now have a total of 1,474 victories each.

February 1, 1990 - CATS FALL TO MISSISSIPPI STATE IN OT, BULLDOGS USE LATE 3-POINTERS AND FOUL SHOT TO WIN 87-86

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Ahead by 10 late in the second half, Kentucky missed another chance to win away from Rupp Arena last night.  Mississippi State's Doug Hartsfield hit a free throw with two seconds left in overtime to beat UK 87-86.  UK's Reggie Hanson was whistled for the foul although Hartfield had stopped his dribble in the lane and appeared to throw up a desperation shot.  The loss dropped UK's record away from Rupp Arena to 0-8 this season. ...

February 1, 1990 - PITINO SAYS HE STAGED CRITICISMS OF WILLIAMS TO HELP WILDCATS WIN

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- After last night's game, Rick Pitino said his criticisms of Mississippi State coach Richard Williams Tuesday were partly staged in an attempt to help Kentucky win.  "I'm not saying I made the whole thing up," the Kentucky coach said.  "But I said some of those things for a reason.  We've got a young team.  I thought it'd be good to have the crowd get on me and take..

February 1, 1990 - NOTHING WAS NORMAL ABOUT THIS NIGHT

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- When Rick Pitino made his entrance last night, he was greeted with all the warmth normally accorded villians of the World Wrestling Federation.  Boos, jeers, shouts . . . all of it rained down on the Kentucky coach.  Here was a guy the Mississippi State fans could sink their teeth into, a man who's been known to light a few emotional fuses from time to time and who'd done so on this occasion by accusing State coach Richard Williams of tasteless...

February 2, 1990 - PITINO WANTS BETTER REFEREEING IN SEC

Until the Southeastern Conference improves it's officiating, it will not be a great basketball conference, Kentucky coach Rick Pitino said yesterday.  Pitino, who has been reprimanded by the SEC office earlier this season for violating the code of ethics, did not indict the referees directly.  But by process of elimination, Pitino made it obvious he thinks sub-par officiating will be the SEC's biggest problem in the future.  "The conference teams will get better...

February 3, 1990 - CLUNKERS IN THE CLUTCH, DESPITE 0-FOR-5 STRING WOODS IS STILL UK'S MAN WITH GAME ON THE LINE

Sean Woods has a knack for slicing through defenses and getting a good shot.  Now, if he can start making a few in the clutch, Kentucky will pull out some of the last-second victories that have slipped away this season.  Five times Woods has misfired with the outcome of a game in the balance.  The latest came Wednesday at Mississippi State where, true to form, Woods dribbled within the shadow of the basket in the final seconds.  But with the defense beaten, his leaning bank shot did not go...

February 3, 1990 - NEW GOALS HELP CATS FACE DOGS.  UK ALL BUT OUT OF SEC RACE, BUT GAME VITAL TO GEORGIA

With the chances for a Southeastern Conference regular-season championship all but mathematically gone, Kentucky looks for new vistas to conquer.  Georgia, a team still in position to ponder a SEC championship and other glories, provides the competition today at Rupp Arena.  The SEC title, UK's only achievable championship this probation-saddled season, appears gone.  The Cats, 9-10 overall, bring a 5-5 SEC record into today's game.  Georgia, riding a three-game...

February 4, 1990 - CATS JUST TOO SLY FOR DOGS.  BACK-DOOR CUTS, CHOKING DEFENSE KILL GEORGIA 88-77

Rick Pitino called it Kentucky's "most intelligent" game of the season.  True, in beating Georgia 88-77 yesterday, his Wildcats alternated the precision of a counterpuncher with numbing automation at the free-throw line.  When the Bulldogs overplayed, UK holstered it's three-point gun and cut back-door.  When the victory had to be clinched, UK made 11 consecutive free throws in the final two minutes, part of a second-half string of 22 straight.  But, ...

Febuary 6, 1990 - TAR HEELS TIE WILDCATS AGAIN

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina tied the University of Kentucky for most college basketball victories again last night by beating Miami (Fla.) 87-74 with it's inside strength.  Both schools have won 1,474 games.  After gradually catching up the last few years, the Tar Heels tied UK two weeks ago, then fell behind again.  Both teams play Wednesday -- UK against Vanderbilt while North Carolina plays North Carolina State.  The Tar Heels play Wake Forest Sunday.  UK is idle over the...
